As much as we appreciate the previous owner installing the pool for us, it is a little bit of work to keep up. We had good clean water that was safe to swim in, but with the ridiculously hard water in the Vegas area, we had a calcium and dissolved solid buildup problem. Much like the Dead Sea in Israel, as the water evaporates it leaves behind all the minerals and the mineral content only gets higher and higher. The only way to decrease the mineral content in the water is to drain and refill with fresh water. With the hottest part of the summer approaching, we decided to take care of this problem now.
Brian rented a pump and got started about 5:00PM and it took 3-4 hours to get the pool drained. We drained the water into the sewer line in the front yard so the water gets recycled per local laws.

Here Brian took a picture from "inside" the pool when it was almost done draining.
Since the spa is above the pool, Brian could use gravity to drain the spa water into a pool with a garden hose.

Later that night Brian got done draining and started to refill. It is just as easy as it sounds, you hook up a hose to the spigot outside and start filling. We put a filter on the end of the hose to catch some of the minerals in the water before it gets in the pool. About 30 hours and 12,000 gallons later, we had a full pool again. Brian added the salt and got the chlorinator going again.
We tested the water today, and its looking good to swim and the mineral levels are where they should be...so far so good.
