Brugges, Belgium
After driving back from Normandy, the next day we were on the road again to Brugges, Belgium. Brugges has been called the "Venice of the North." We don't know about that, but we will say, maybe the best chocolate and some of the best beer in Europe. We arrived and went to a chocolate shop named Dumon and got quite a sampling. Unfortunately, it started raining so we went back to the hotel and began eating chocolate. After a while the rain quit and we went to dinner a nice Italian place (I know Italian in Belgium, but it was the best risotto I ever had). After than Brian led us down some back roads into an alley way and finally to Herberg Vlissinghe, the oldest pub in town (1515). There Brian and my mom and dad enjoyed some Brugges Zot, brewed in town. The next day we looked around a bit, but the weather was raining again, harder this time, and we soon left for Germany. Unfortunately, our pictures are on my mom's camera so we will post when we are able to.

I absolutely love Brugges! I am with you as far as not being sure that it is the Venice of the North, but the cobblestone streets and the canals made me think of a fairy tale place. I also could have been entirely intoxicated with chocolate though (and maybe even Leffe, my favorite Belgian beer)so I could be biased. Thanks for all of the great posts from this latest round of traveling- I really learned a lot about Normandy from your blog and can't wait to go in person.
